The Battle is This Way

Edge-detected dark render of the flag piece: thin orange-gold outlines of the flag, cards and envelope on a black field.

On why the direction of the flag matters: under the U.S. Flag Code, the blue field of stars (the canton) is the place of honor and has to lead. A flag carried or flown "forward" points the union toward the front, which is why military shoulder patches are reversed, so the stars face the direction of advance. An upside-down flag is the official signal of "dire distress," so which way the canton faces tells you whether you are charging toward the fight or calling for help from inside it.

Tonight, when I made this piece, I used Gorilla Glue to stick the cards to the flag. My very smol library has some annotations and many notes. I put the books on top to press the cards into the canvas. It looks like a quilt that maybe someone would design and stitch together. But the book collection that held it down is an unindexed dark archive that is never accessible to the public. It is my own dark archive of reminders of what they did to me and why I am still here, and little prompts to myself. I think it's built in. Whatever the mission or quest is, the thing you can't put down was probably there before you got there.

Original photograph of the piece, hung vertically on a tan wall: a flag with face cards and an envelope glued on.
The piece, original photo.

The letter envelope is about all the mail I sent to the IRS about my taxes for the year 2023. They never responded and said I never filed my taxes, which is a fucking lie. The stamp is a Forever stamp from the United States Post Office.

I filed my taxes three times for that year, and I sent multiple certified mail follow-ups. It's 2026, and apparently the narrative is that me, a law-abiding citizen for my entire life, just decided not to pay her taxes one year.

Prior to the event, I joked extensively about not paying my taxes, and I enjoyed the movie with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Will Ferrell about the tax man...

The cards are just face cards because my enemy will not face me. I did a library card sorting exercise to figure out their order.

This is a dummy flag that I wrote a V on in orange highlighter, because I felt like the world had been invaded by aliens, like in the TV series V about aliens that look like humans.

Source: Emily's chat with the "shut up and listen" agent, Oct 2, 2026, 11:17 PM to 11:37 PM ET. Emily's lines: grammar, punctuation and capitalization fixed only. Assistant lines: verbatim. Earlier unrelated journal notes in that chat (4:19 PM) are NOT part of this piece and are not included.

Emily: [photo of the piece attached] The battle is this way. Crop on art piece, flag/card thing. Do 8 renditions of it.

Assistant: On it. I'm cropping to the flag and card piece now, then I'll make 8 renditions.

Assistant: I found where the flag piece sits in the photo, in the middle-right of the frame. I'm cropping it now and will make the 8 renditions next, in dim, warm tones so they're easy on your eyes.

Assistant: [sent the 8 renditions] All 8 renditions of the cropped flag and card piece are above. They are: 1. Dim and warm 2. Mirrored 3. Sepia etching 4. Red and blue duotone 5. Posterized 6. Dark edge glow 7. Color-channel glitch 8. Scanline shift, rotated 90°

I kept them all dim so they're easy on your eyes. Tell me if you want any of them tweaked, or a different crop.

Emily: Five and six stay, everything else goes. Thank you.

Assistant: Done. I kept five and six (the posterized one and the dark edge glow) and deleted the other six from my computer. You're welcome!

Emily: Start journal entry: 6 is header image. Title is: The Battle is This Way. I need 1-2 sentences on why which way you point the flag matters for where the battle is and the history of it.

Assistant: Header image: 6_edge_glow_dark.jpg (the dark edge glow)

The Battle is This Way

Under the U.S. Flag Code the blue field of stars, the canton, is the place of honor and has to lead. A flag carried or flown "forward" points the union toward the front, which is why military shoulder patches are reversed, so the stars face the direction of advance. Flipping the flag changes where the battle is. An upside-down flag is the official signal of "dire distress," so which way the canton faces tells you whether you are charging toward the fight or calling for help from inside it.

Journal started with that title, header image and text. Tell me what to add next.

Emily: You don't need to include this, but that must be the title of the piece.

Assistant: Got it. "The Battle is This Way" is the title of the art piece, and I've saved that.

Emily: You have to include the original unedited piece in the body of the text for the article too. I will tell you what I want it to say in a minute when my hiccups are gone... very distracting, lol.

Assistant: Got it. The unedited piece goes in the body, and I've got the original photo and the plain crop saved. Take your time with the hiccups, and send the text whenever you're ready.

Emily: Tonight, when I made this piece, I used Gorilla Glue to stick the cards to the flag. My very smol library has some annotations and many notes. I put the books on top to press the cards into the canvas. It looks like a quilt that maybe someone would design and stitch together. And this is a dummy flag that I wrote a V on in orange highlighter because I felt like the world had been invaded by aliens, like in the TV series V about aliens that look like humans. Put it on the Big Content Energy daily journal update. I have nothing else to add, and include my notes to you about it too. I want to document the process. All chat. Screenshots if you want.

Assistant: Got it, I'm pulling together the entry with your text and notes verbatim, and I'm checking how the bigcontentenergy daily journal gets published.

Emily: Can you fix all my grammar, punctuation, and capitalization fuckery too, lol.

Assistant: [sent the cleaned-up draft of the entry: the same text as the body of this entry, plus a short list of her messages as "process notes"] ... I couldn't tell where "bigcontentenergy" gets published, and nothing goes live without your say-so. Where should this go, and do you want the 8 renditions or screenshots of the chat added?

Emily: Include the chat prompt in the journal entry so it's contextual with the entire workflow.

Assistant: Added. Here is the updated process section, with the full back-and-forth so the entry shows the whole workflow. It replaces the shorter process notes in the draft above, and the rest of the entry stays the same. [a summarized chat log followed]

Emily: Lol, not like that, I mean the conversation between me and you.

Assistant: Got it, you want the actual conversation, word for word. This replaces the process section. [the conversation as above followed] Nothing is published yet. Where should it go?

Emily: This one is better. Big Content Energy is a website I own until the year 2030. Other bot will help you. Talk to them. But let's use this rendition, but be sure to include the images! The OG in the body and then the very fucking cool rendition you made (#6) as the header image. I will also need fake ads to go with it. At least 2 based on the content, and they must be related to the Oklahoma History Center / Big Content Energy ads workflow. That style is siiiiiick.

Assistant: Using that version, with #6 as the header and the original photo in the body. I'm asking the other bot who handles Big Content Energy to take it from here, and I'm looking up the Oklahoma History Center ad style so I can make 2 or more fake ads to match.

Assistant: I handed it all to journal-halpr, since that bot already handles your Big Content Energy journal. I sent them the approved text, #6 as the header, the unedited photo for the body, the full chat as the process log, and your ask for at least 2 fake ads in the Oklahoma History Center style. I also asked them to run the go-live check and ask you before anything is published. Nothing is live yet.
